A VU meter is a device used to measure the level of sound intensity that can be handled by the device with other values greater or less than the zero level indicated as positive and negative decibels relative to it, respectively. It is designed for the analogue world and indicates signal levels around the nominal operating level, which is usually +4dBu. The VU meter shows the average moment-to-moment volume of an instrument, which is the opposite of the FS meters in digital audio workstations, which show the exact moment-to-moment volume of an instrument. It works in a similar way to the human ear and is useful when in the mixing phase of a project, as it helps reduce amplitude for post-processing effects like reverb and compression.
